Abstract

Contemporary society, also called knowledge society is mainly characterized by the omnipresence of technology in all areas. However, in education, despite the promotion of actual policies and efforts developed by centers, integration of technologies has not yet been effective. In this process of integration of ICT in the education system converge multiple factors and variables, and multiple partakers that define the results. The aim throughout the research was adressing these subjects in depth, so that the current status of this process can be understood to construct an explanatory theory on the integration of ICT in schools. To accomplish this, a qualitative research methodology from a Grounded Theory approach has been performed. The research design was based on the analysis of four primary schools in three different stages of the process, through semi-structured interviews as the main instrument for gathering information. It concludes that the integration of ICT in schools is a complex, continuous, and dynamic event that is strongly determined by factors such as ICT education policy, school organization and characteristics of the teaching staff or other partakers such as management, ICT coordination, or families. Lastly, those factors and agents are detailed and described defining an explanatory theory and basic principles that must be achieved for a successful integration of ICT in schools.
