This doctoral thesis, entitled “Evaluation of Wikipedia as an educational resource in the sphere of the Spanish Higher Education community” aims to study in depth the way in which Spanish universities are currently dealing with and integrating one of the most powerful Web 2.0 tools in the world, Wikipedia. The site is ranked at present as the fifth most visited website in the planet, which shows the importance that it has acquired in the everyday life of people ever since its foundation in 2003. Every day more and more teachers show their students the best ways of using Wikipedia correctly, so that they understand the pros and cons this tool offers. Before doing this, it would be interesting for them to know how and when their students use it, which articles do they mainly visit, what level of importance do they give Wikipedia in the framework of their studies, whether they contribute editing articles in it or not, whether they know their internal operating procedures, and other basic questions that we unveil throughout this research.
