Abstract

Chess and bridge are table games in which strategic ability, reasoned decision making and reflective knowledge of the game are very preponderant factors against chance and luck that characterizes other types of table games, such as checkers or poker. Research on these board games has usually focused on aspects such as school performance or intellectual enhancement of those practicing these activities. This is the main goal of this article, to initiate a new way of research aimed at illuminating the social and cultural context in which these activities are developed and acquire significance on the part of the people who practice them. In order to do this, it is inspired and takes theoretical concepts central to the thinking of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, focusing specifically on the model of analysis of the symbolic capitals involved in the social practice of these activities. The empirical study of these economic, cultural, and social capitals will allow us to know what position of symbolic social prestige is associated with people who play chess and bridge
