Abstract

If we go into the history of Western music, going through the different historical periods, women musicians have had few opportunities to enter the academic field and later join the professional world. When we refer to classical music, there are few female references in fields such as composition, orchestral conducting and performance in a classical music orchestra. The main objective of this article is to identify the factors that make it difficult for women to pursue a career in these three fields. To do so, as a starting point, the situation of past centuries is taken, by collecting biographical data on women musicians. The current panorama, specifically in Spain, has been analyzed by designing an interview. The participants were 30 musicians of both sexes, different ages and from different autonomous communities. The results were qualitatively analyzed by categorizing the responses and, in addition, the types of profiles in the responses were observed, finding significant differences between men and women, between married and single people, according to generations, etc., in each of the twelve categories, ranging from the little or no presence of women in concert programs to the small number of female references in performance, conducting and composition.
