Abstract

From the theoretical tenets of the Vallerand’s (1997) Hierarchical Model of Intrinsic andExtrinsic Motivation and from the postulates of Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan,2000), the present work aims at examining the different factor structures proposed bythe prior research for the Situational Motivation Scale (Guay et al., 2000) in the SpanishPhysical Education context. In this study, 644 Physical Education Post-Compulsory and Compulsory Secondary students (344 men y 300 women, Mage = 15.04, DS= 1.58) participated. The confirmatory factor analysis showed a poor goodness-of-fit both for theoriginal 16-items 4-factor correlated structure and for the different alternative structurescontemplated in the previous literature (i.e., 15-item, 14-item, 13-item and 4-factor correlatedmodels, respectively). Nevertheless, the findings supported psychometrically a 12-item 4-factor correlated structure was psychometric supported in this study. In turn, thisnew factor structure via correlation analysis obtained by the confirmatory factor analysisunderpinned simplex pattern proposed by Self-Determination Theory. In its conclusion, the present research provides evidences that recommend the use of a new factor structurefor the Situational Motivation Scale (i.e., 12-item 4-factor correlated model) for PhysicalEducation Post-Compulsory and Compulsory Secondary students in the Spanish contextin order to measure the different forms of situational motivation in the teaching-learningprocess in this subject.
