Resumen

This thesis investigates the current state of secondary school teacher training regarding sexual diversity and gender in adolescence. To this end, in the first extensive phase we carried out an analysis of the contents related to sexual diversity and gender present in the syllabus of the master’s degree in Teacher Training for Secondary School from national public universities. In a second intensive phase we gathered information on different aspects of teacher training and the teaching profession in secondary school through in-depth interviews with master’s teachers at the national level, active secondary school teachers and professionals responsible for in-service training centres in Cantabria. Results show that contents related to sexual diversity and gender still have a faint presence in the syllabus of the master’s subjects and that they find obstacles of various kinds when materializing themselves in secondary school teacher’s initial and in-service training as well as in secondary school classrooms, despite being a clear concern for students and education professionals and being also included in the legislation. This work ends with some proposals for improving the initial training of secondary school teachers regarding sexual diversity and gender, guiding it towards the values of equity and inclusion.
